Ten years' GD
First interdisciplinary football comparison between dermatologists and pharmacists
Pill kickers North-Rhine winning 3:1 versus the German dermatological national team

Report by Jan Kresken, Münster

A novelty on the football ground came about at the sport park Süchtelner Höhen in Viersen on 2nd July 2005. For the first time a football match between dermatologists and pharmacists took place on the occasion of the festive event of the ten-year establishing of the Gesellschaft für Dermopharmazie. The selection of pharmacists under the name "Pillenkicker Nordrhein (pill kickers North-Rhine)" won 3:1 after 80 minutes of hard but at all times fair contest against the German dermatological national team managed by the GD board member Dr. Dr. Thomas Ruzicka. The pharmacists thus assured the GD-jubilee cup which team captain Dr. Stefan Derix received in the course of the GD Jazz night. .
In the course of a festive event on the occasion of the ten-year anniversary of the GD, an interdisciplinary football match took place for the first time encompassing dermatologists and pharmacists. In this match the German dermatological national team with its team captain professor Dr. Dr. Thomas Ruzicka (below right) had to admit defeat in the end with 1:3 against the pharmacist selection pill kickers North-Rhine after a 1:0 half-time leadership.

The German dermatological national team which had been coached by the GD department head professor Dr. Matthias Augustin, Hamburg, instead of their owing to an injury at short notice hindered coach could only free themselves after ten minutes' play from the clasp of the pharmacists and were in particular dangerous by counterattacks and standards. Thus Jan Möller-Holtkamp, the vigilant defense organiser of the pharmacists was just about able to ward off at the goal line in the 10th minute after a tightly drawn corner by dermatologist Dr. Martin Braun, Überlingen.

The dermatologists realized the first goal of the match in the 16th minute after a comparable situation: Dr. Braun performed again a corner at the short post from where a defender of the pharmaceutical team scored a goal untenably for goal keeper Uwe Wisniewski into the upper left corner of his own goal by employing the back of his head.

A scene of the match showing how determinedly the team struggled to get in ball possession. In the course of the anytime fair game both teams exerted utmost dedication from the first to the last minute of the match.

Pharmacists shocked
from own goal

Shocked from their own goal, the pill kickers withdrew for some minutes in their own half of the pitch whereas the dermatologists first of all restrained to keep their advantage. Therefore in the middle of the first half time most actions took exclusively place in the midfield whereas clear scoring changes on both sides remained scarce.

Only starting from the 25th minute, the pill kickers became aware again of their offensive strength and had right off the bat numerous goal chances: a free kick by Christian Knodel, Horrem, duffed the goal of the dermatologists only curtly from a promising situation, the pill kickers passed up their best chance in the 32nd minute of the first half time when Peter Lutz, Solingen, missed the goal from the right side uncovered in front of goal keeper Homey after a flat throw-in by Ralf Bodelier, Jülich.

Nevertheless, also the dermatologists took again and again advantage of chances: accordingly, after a good cross by Dr. Braun - Dr. Körber, Essen made a good header which goalkeeper Wisniewski baffled by means of an excellent paree in the 35th minute of the match. In return goalkeeper Homey could just about direct a powerful and placed shot after efficient dribbling by Harald Feuser by means of his fingertips. The header by Feuser from the resulting corner kick was also superbly held by Homey.

The goal keeper of the German national team, professor Dr. Bernhard Homey was often situated in the center of the match. Thanks to several masterly defence actions of their goal keeper, the dermatologists were able to keep the outcome of the match for a long time pending. Only in the second halftime when the puissance of some dermatologists slowly decreased, Homey had to fetch the ball three times from rearward.

At the beginning of the second half time, in the 49th minute, the - at that time by all means deserved equalizer was scored by the pill kickers in a standard situation: the former juvenile national player Ralf Bodelier placed the football by means of a powerful and placed header into the right lower corner of the dermatologists' goal after a remarkable cross by Lutz. Afterwards both teams were determined to control the match at the time being and not to allow further scoring chances. This is the reason why most actions took then place in the midfield. Only in the 58th minute the dermatologists seized a chance again by a low shot of Dr. Ott, Überlingen after a corner kick by Dr. Klaus Strömer, Mönchengladbach which had been competently baffled by the goal keeper of the pharmacists.

Also the spectators enjoyed the football game between dermatologists and pharmacists. In the half time break, the referee Dr. Hans Walter Reinhardt conversed with the GD-members of committee professor Dr. Ulrike Heinrich, professor Dr. Monika Schäfer-Korting and professor Dr. Hans Christian Korting (from left).

Decision in the middle
of the second half time

The power of the dermatologists noticeably decreased after the 60th minute of the match. In 67th minute a diverted low shot by Knoedel could just about be warded off by goal keeper Homey, the latter was then devoid of chances in the 71st minute: after a low shot from the left side by Knodel who was gaining increasingly strength, goalgetter Carlo Bacciocco, Jülich who could only act as exchange player due to a lesion, got hold of the football and scored it into the left lower corner of the goal from a short distance past the forwarding Homey to the 2:1 lead in front of defender Dr. Ott.

A preliminary decision in the first dermatologic-pharmaceutical football duel thus came about even though the dermatologists - in the first line professor Ruzicka and private lecturer Dr. Wolfgang Weyers, Freiburg, tried to equalize once again in spite of decreasing strength. However, in the 76th minute Ralf Bodelier invaded - after excellent dribbling - the penalty area of the dermatologists via the right side again and scored the final result of 3:1 for the pill kickers by means of a powerful shot from an acute angle into the left upper goal corner.

The defeated dermatologists did not miss out in the award ceremony: besides a sparkling wine present the team captain professor Dr. Dr. Thomas Ruzicka (left) received a memory insignia of the first football match between dermatologists and pharmacists donated from the Apothekerkammer Nordrhein (Pharmacist Chamber North-Rhine) from Dr. Stefan Derix the team captain of the pharmacists.

To be stressed owing to outstanding performance are the double scorer Ralf Bodelier on the side of the pharmacists, the agile midfield player Harald Feuser as well as Jan Möller-Holtkamp who united the defence of the pill kickers also in ticklish situations and excelled by establishing of smart game structures. On the side of the dermatologists, in particular private lecturer Dr. Weyers and Dr. Körber attracted attention due to their tireless performance and commitment besides goal keeper professor Homey. Moreover, the standards and crosses by Dr. Braun stood out positively arousing again and again hazards in the adversarial penalty area.

The award ceremony of the teams took place in the course of the GD jazz night in the evening. For the winning pharmacist selection, their team captain Dr. Stefan Derix (center) received the GD-anniversary cup. The cup was presented by Lothar Kämmerling from the company Otto Geilenkirchen who had donated the cup.

In the end the victory over the pharmacists was merited at this extent. However, tribute is also to be paid to the performance raised by the dermatologists who only admitted defeat after a sacrificial contest. Thus both teams could perceive themselves as winners of a one-time event and there is hope that - potentially already in the course of the coming GD's annual meeting that there will be a second leg for both teams.
